As people who live the reality of the countryside every day, it’s almost impossible to find anyone more aware of climate change, both its repercussions and its consequences.
No one is as directly affected as we are by the decrease in rainfall, rising temperatures, or the disproportionate force of natural phenomena like the major storms that occur more and more frequently. Because all of this has a direct impact on our crops.
So, for everyone at Mooma, being sustainable is a conviction and a personal commitment. But it’s also an act of pure logic and consistency with how we live. We are sustainable in head and heart, and we try to be so in everything we do across all areas, because it’s already a natural part of how we do and see things.
We are a benchmark in the circular economy because we are pioneers in completing a very wide circle that begins with cultivation in the fields, continues with product preparation, and ends with consumption at the table. All with the same sense, criteria, and commitment.
Waste in our model is practically zero because the fruit is consumed fresh or transformed into juices, ciders, vinegars, jams, cakes… And all the organic matter generated in the process returns to the fields as organic fertilizer, completing the natural cycle.
Our Km 0 philosophy means we support local producers and distributors of meat, fish, rice, cured meats, cheeses… helping to maintain a network of SMEs and boosting their future with fair and respectful treatment of production costs, prioritizing product quality.
Besides minimizing our ecological footprint on the planet as much as possible, we are committed to leaving a positive mark on our region. That’s why we get involved with all those who want to make farming their way of life, offering them stable employment in a place where they can grow and enjoy contact with the land.
We promote internal training in good environmental practices. And our company culture is based on respect, proximity, and social awareness.
We promote educational and outreach activities where we show the reality of the countryside, our crops, and the production processes of our products to everyone who visits us. In this way, we help spread ecological awareness and environmental sensitivity among those who don’t have first-hand contact with the primary sector, while creating an emotional connection between the visitor and the surrounding landscape.
We limit the use of phytosanitary products that help control pests affecting the crops. In the case of apples, scab control accounts for up to 80% of the total, and it is countered by sanitizing the estates and using treatments based on agro-climatic prediction methods to prevent infections from spreading.
We rationalize the amount of water used for irrigation. With significant investments in highly efficient irrigation systems, we meet the plants’ needs without losing or wasting water unnecessarily, both in its channeling and its use.
We promote other environmentally friendly initiatives: such as crop rotation; preserving biodiversity with ground cover; using new crops to regenerate the soil in apple orchards when they need replanting at the end of their productive life with regenerative plants like mustard, radish, or sorghum; and new proposals that continually emerge from innovation and respect for tradition.
Having the facilities for making juices and ciders right in our own fields reduces energy expenditure on transport to zero. This achieves an exemplary reduction in energy resources.
We work to reduce our environmental impact by prioritizing recyclable and reusable packaging, including a collaboration with recycling companies to increase bottle reuse. And when that’s not possible, we seek to offer only packaging that minimizes the amount of plastic used.
